Enlightened to Something Different

About eight years ago I used to live in a town called Burleson which happens to be a city outside of Fort Worth in Texas and during my stay in Burleson I have to say that I encountered several different concerts that have stuck with me for years. Within that eight year period I have been to some seriously amazing shows. One show in particular that stands out in my mind while I was living in Texas was a Slipknot concert that my friends and I went to back in 2000.

Their music is pretty intense as well as their energy during a show. I became somewhat of a fan after I saw them live. Slipknot music seemed to be popular among the select few that I was hanging out with at the time when I was living there. I have to say that I respect the group for their originality along with their uniqueness as a unit. They definitely made an impression on me after witnessing one of their shows. I love it when I go to a show not fully aware of the capability of the band that I’m about to see and then they go ahead and throw me a curve ball and just knock me off my feet.

Another band who did that to me was a group called Nickelback. Some of my co-workers from Chili’s and I went to go see them in concert and surprisingly I didn’t even realize how many Nickelback Songs I actually knew the words to. I found myself singing along with several of their tunes and I didn’t even have any of their albums yet. After that concert I definitely became more of a fan and had to go ahead and buy a few of their CD’s. The majority of the music that I listened to growing up was oldies that stemmed from the Motown era along with classic rock and beach boy tunes.

My mother always loved listening to the oldies station so it just kind of stuck with me. I wasn’t exposed to too much country, alternative or heavy metal music because it just never seemed that appealing to me. Well after living in Texas, I have to say that my ears were open to a few of those genres that I generally ignored. I actually made friends with the kind of people that I never used to hang out with, being like country/cowboy guys that were into Country, Rock and Alternative groups. I have to say, we definitely had lots of fun during my stay in Texas. I got a piece of what it is like to hang with some real Texas boys, and boy do they know how to have a good time.

One of my friends in Texas got me hip to this Trivium music game that he found online and at the time I didn’t have a whole lot of musical knowledge. I was only educated on a limited amount of music genres. So the more knowledge you had about music and all the different styles of it, then the better you did in the game. I certainly thanked my friend for helping to educate me on the few styles like country, rock and alternative that I had no interest in or understanding thereof.

Now, I feel like my ears have been opened to many different styles and genres of music. I may not necessarily get into all of them but I definitely have a respect for all the different styles that exist. Since I have been away from Texas, now living in Arizona, I have been to some very memorable shows and I must say that if it wasn’t for my experiences while being in Texas then I probably wouldn’t love the music that I love today.
