The females who generally act or perform some characteristic roles in the live theatres or movie cinemas are termed as the movie actress. Besides this, the actresses are also performing various roles on the television programs. Like actors, the actresses also play dramatic roles; sing songs for the movie and utter dialogues on their own. In short the actors or actresses portray the realistic roles of their role models whose character they are assigned to play on the screens through the movie cinemas or personally live on the theatre stages.
The process of performing some specific roles for the cinema or the theatre is said to have initiated about a few centuries ago, sometimes during 534 BC, when a Greek actor named Thespis literally stepped on the stage at the Theatre 
Dionysus to become the very first person to deliver dialogues as character in the typical play. Earlier to that, stories were told in songs through dances with the help of dialogues narration by the third person off the stage.
In the olden era only the men were becoming actors in some societies and it was believed outrageous for women to go on the stages. The belief continued right till 17th century when it was out of order in Venice. During 19th and 20th centuries, acting was adopted and honored as the popular profession and art.
